I have now sent you a few aquatics bro't today from Burwal Fen...Potamogeton gramineum,... The first of these I reckon a rare Plant, & I believe has escaped Mr. Relhan in his Flora Cantab. There is a good drawing of it in Flora Danica but the Plant referred to by Withering in Ray's Synopsis is a different Species. I suspect the Compressum...Newmarket, 3.7.1794, Hemsted in litt. Sowerby 26:165.
I sent five specimens of Potamogeton gramineum to Sowerby and have now sent you some: and also my Burwell Plant, surely it is the Plant in Flor: Dan. t.222. my specimen is larger but I have no doubt it is the same. Relhan,litt.1799.
Potamogeton gramineum [comment above name '(only compressum JES.)'] You may examine a hundred specimens before you find a flower in some instances the peduncle is longer than in the specimens now sent. The old plants are covered by that shine you will observe upon them, which looks brown. Relhan,litt.1799.
I have not been able to go after the Potamogetons, I really cannot spend even a sixpence, – my situation is so nearly starving: I will if possible contrive it. You will find in my Herbarium, my Burwell Fen plant, which agrees with Flor.Dan.222. Relhan,litt.1800b.
Potam gramineus The plant I send you, came by Dr. Smith's request, his words are 'it will be well worth your drawing' I have long watched it and never saw it in flower till this Summer. Dr Smith says it is the true Potamogeton gramineum Lin: The beauty of the leaves, each with 5 nerves, is very great, particularly when the sun shines on the floating Plant. I believe I have got another Potamogeton for you, but I will send it to Norwich for examination. ...P.S. encore Pray look into my Herbarium, and see if there is not a Potamogeton in it called gramineum. which agrees with the figure of Flor. Danica, 222. If so, Dr Smith says it is a new English Plant – my specimen came from Burwell Fen, Cambridgeshire. –, n.d., Relhan in litt. Sowerby,47:53.
A spec. named P. gramineus was in Relh. Herb. Bab.ann.
Potamogeton Fl.Dan. Burwell Fen. In Mr Walford's pond near Haverhill. Relhan,litt.1799.
Potam heterophyllum I enclose a letter to Mr Teesdale which I hope you will have the goodness to convey him: I leave it open that you may see the plant, it is the Potamogeton, I have often mentioned to you, from Burwell fen, I showed a little time ago to Dr Smith at Norwich, he told me it was a new one and desired me to name it, I should like to call it heterophyllum: I have a specimen so well laid down that you might make an excellent drawing from it: this I will lend you only as I cannot get another without great difficulty, if you wish to have it: I have no objection to your publishing it before my Flora carries it. Cambridge 11.9.1801, Relhan in litt. Sowerby,47:46.
We received this Potamogeton from Mr. Teesdale and the Rev. Mr. Hemsted several years ago, but have long been in doubt about it....Smith,Eng.Bot. (1804) 18:1285.
