The first of these I reckon a rare Plant, & I believe has escaped Mr. Relhan in his Flora Cantab. There is a good drawing of it in Flora Danica but the Plant referred to by Withering in Ray's Synopsis is a different Species. I suspect the Compressum...Newmarket, 3.7.1794, Hemsted in litt. Sowerby 26:165. I sent five specimens of Potamogeton gramineum to Sowerby and have now sent you some: and also my Burwell Plant, surely it is the Plant in Flor: Dan. t.222. my specimen is larger but I have no doubt it is the same. Potamogeton gramineum [comment above name '(only compressum JES.)'] You may examine a hundred specimens before you find a flower in some instances the peduncle is longer than in the specimens now sent. The old plants are covered by that shine you will observe upon them, which looks brown. Relhan,litt.1799.
