Of pety whine.... In Cambridgeshire this herb is called a whyne, but I put pety to it, to make difference between this herb and a fur, which in many places of England is also called a Whyne Petye....The branches are full of sharp and strong prickles. [Fn. 'The illustration is of Ononis repens, but Turner seems to be describing Ononis spinosa'.]Turner,1551,236.
