Orchis morio mas foliis maculatis The male Fools-stones. It flowers first of all the orchids, about the end of April. The colour of the flower is generally purple, less often a reddish colour. Ray,1660,106(88).

Orchis mascula...The leaves are usually quite devoid of the spots found on ordinary varieties of O. mascula, and the coloured petaloid bract next the raceme is wanting. A similar plant has been found near a place called Camois Hall, in Cambridgeshire, growing in dense shade, where it attained a height of 16-18 inches. [all vars of O. mascula acc. to CCB.] D. Moore.
